Princess
of Wales.
Possibly the most
famous model Newton Wilson produced was the "Princess of
Wales". During its production (1870's), it underwent various
design changes.
Towards the end of its life, it was felt necessary to incorporate
a facility for bobbin winding without the main mechanism of
the machine being in motion (a feature becoming the norm by
the 1880's). In an effort to keep the gear-driven bobbin winder,
the somewhat novel "wheel within a wheel" was developed.
The idea worked, of course, but it has to be looked on as a
somewhat eccentric solution.
