Dating from 1893, Augustin Avrial's patent forms the basis of the "La Populaire" machine. The design envisaged a rack and pinion system to produce rotary motion in the main shaft. The rack is reciprocated vertically by hand pressure from the top, or pedal via connecting strap from beneath.
