                the basic designs of his machines long established, W.F.Thomas' 
                1856 patent focusses on peripheral devices for specific applications.Fig.1 shows a sprung, obliquely mounted presser wheel "d" 
                - this being employed to keep the edge of the work up to a 
                guide. Glove sewing is one application cited for its use.
 In fig.4, a rotary brush "f", is used when applying 
                edge bindings. The resulting action keeps the underside of the 
                binding smooth against the fabric, which is shown at "h".
